Surviving the Holidays by Keeping the Weight Off!!!

Ahh the holidays. The season of giving can also be called the season of gaining, gaining weight that is.
That’s right it’s that time of the year again. You know, when you say I am not going to go crazy eating everything in sight. I am going to pass up all of the treats brought into the office. I am going to be sensible at Aunt B’s on Thanksgiving and there is no way that I am going to feast on both pumpkin and pecan pie on Christmas day.
This is the time of year that we enjoy many things; family, friends, gifts and more. But come January we often end up paying for it with tighter pants. On average a person can gain almost ten pounds during the holidays. Ouch, that is scary. Even for those of us who live active lifestyles the holidays can be a challenge, but there are ways to get through the holidays without sabotaging a years worth of work.

Here are some simple tips to help you survive the holidays.
1. Don’t miss your workouts: Stay on track even if you are going to be on the road to see relatives get a workout in. If you don’t have access to a gym or weights then be your own gym and get a body-weight workout in. Go running, bring a jump rope or pack some resistance bands to take with you. What ever you do, get your workouts in.
2. Drink a lot of water:    You know the deal; drink, drink, drink. The more water that you drink the less that you will feel the urge to over indulge. You will also be less likely to over do the alcohol as well.
3. Don’t over do the alcohol:Yes it is the time of year for celebrating but keep the alcohol within reasonable limits.Don’t over it because you are adding wasted calories and sugars. Alcohol can also stimulate your appetite and you don’t want that.
4. Survey the feast before filling your plate:   Check out what is being served up and make good choices. Fill up on protein, vegetables & fruits.Yes, I know that you are going to want to sweet stuff but keep it to small amounts.
5. Don’t skip your meals: If you are on a 4-6 meal a dinner program don’t skip. Even if you are a normal eater, that is three meals a day don’t skip. Saying that I am skipping lunch so that I can load up later is not what you want to do.
6. Use a smaller plate: This is a trick that I learned a few years back that was instrumental in helping to change my nutritional lifestyle. By using a smaller plate I still ate what I like but it kept my portions under control.
7. Snack smart: I know that the cakes, cookies, pies and many other great family snacks and traditions are going to be available and hard to pass up. You have to snack smart. Keep snacks small, try sampling instead. Offer to split a piece of pie or spice cake with someone. Enjoy the deserts and treats but do it moderation and be a smart holiday snacker.
8. Keep a log:     Yes it can be tedious during the holidays but if you think about having to log something before you eat it then you may think twice about it.
9. If you are going to have a big meal or over do it make that your cheat day.
10. Realize that you are human: Don’t go hard on yourself if you have a bad day during the holidays. Just realize that you are human and learn from it.
So there you go, ten quick holiday survival tips. Use them and you will be able to enjoy the holiday season without having to buy new pants to start the new year.
Happy Holidays.

5 tips to Lose Belly Fat Quickly

You Are What You Eat
You’ve probably heard someone say this cliché before: “You are what you eat.” It’s true. The food and drink that you put into your body are its fuel, and it’s that fuel that the body uses to build and repair itself. If you eat unhealthy foods, you will be unhealthy. If you eat healthy foods, however, you will be healthy. Here are five more reasons to start eating and living a healthier lifestyle.

1. Your body will be more resistant to colds and flu.

Wouldn’t you like to have a naturally more effective immune system? When you live a healthy lifestyle, you are much more likely to be able to fight off infections, without the need for antibiotics or other medications.

2. You can avoid some of the most common societal diseases.

Cutting out sweets is part of my current weight reduction program. I have lost 13 pounds and need to lose 17 more.
These are diseases like diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, etc.—the ones that are caused largely by lifestyle, rather than just by family history or by chance. When you eat the right foods and exercise, you have a much lower chance of getting any of this disease early in life and later in life. I have all three. It is not fun!

3. You’ll have more energy for your day.

Just like putting better fuel into your car will pack more of a punch when it comes to powering your car, fueling your body with the right foods will give you more energy throughout the day. This is why, for example, it’s important to eat a proper breakfast, because it’s how your body fuels itself during the day. More energy means more fun and more productivity! At age 83, I don’t have much punch but I do get around.

4. Losing weight is an automatic side effect.

Eating healthier and working out are the best ways to lose weight. Even if that is not your main reason for living a healthier lifestyle, it can definitely be a positive side effect of taking these steps. You don’t even have to put that much effort into it, it just happens! But you must cut out the crap; fast foods and excessive sweets. I have 8 fruit trees and a grape vine so I can stay away from other foods that taste sweet. And I feed the birds. They eat seed (grains from my feeder and fruit from my trees and bushes. Healthy!
Right now I’m trying to lose weight. I need to lose 85 pounds. I’m half way. Fifteen pounds to go. I’m using my Big Fat John method where I write down in a little note book what I eat, one food on a line. Just writing down what you eat helps. I get down to under 1500 calories a day just by doing that.

5. You will sleep better and have less stress.

My wife and I once walked together. Now she is too ill.
Bad habits and bad foods put a strain on the body and mind. When you live a healthier lifestyle by eating the right foods and exercising, your body will be under less stress and you will actually sleep better, which means more energy and motivation for the next day!
You want to stay active. I take my grandson fishing every week, teach my granddaughter how to paint and her son how to draw. I take a walk everyday. I photograph the birds in my trees eating my fruit (along with the squirrels) and I paint landscapes and critters (on canvas because I can’t catch them.) I go birding when I can. And, of course, I work my websites.
